Descript

Creates 15-20 marketing pages per month with a powerful sync.

“Whalesync saves me a week per month in terms of time. A week is probably conservative.”

About Descript

In 2017, Descript transformed the podcasting industry forever with the launch of its doc-like editing tool. Thanks to that innovation, they’ve since been able to raise $100M and grow to over 100 employees. Today, the product is packed with hundreds of powerful features that serve independent creators and in-house creatives, ranging from transcription and video editing to remote recording and voice cloning.

Challenge

Braveen Kumar joined Descript as a Content Marketing Manager in 2023 to own the company’s scalable landing page program to make the product more discoverable to more people through search engines.

Marketing a horizontal product like Descript, packed with so many tools and use cases, is no easy feat though—especially with an ever-evolving offering.

Braveen knew “scalable” didn’t just mean rolling out over a dozen landing pages per month by hiring a bunch of writers. It meant building a system for publishing, updating, and optimizing a portfolio of 100+ pages that wasn’t bogged down by complex process, multiple sources of truth, or spending time uploading and updating content in Webflow.

At first, Braveen tried using Zapier to automate parts of the process, such as creating Google Doc content briefs in bulk. But no matter how he tried to save time, the biggest blocker was still getting the content into Webflow—never mind optimizing and maintaining it afterwards.

Solution

While Zapier helped Braveen save time in other ways, he knew he needed a different solution to reduce the time he spent in Webflow. After some research, Braveen discovered Whalesync, which offered a 2-way sync between Webflow and database tools like Airtable and Notion.

A lightbulb went off as he realized Whalesync made it possible to manage this process in what’s basically a spreadsheet.

“Whalesync covered all the bases and then some, including things I didn't know I needed. Like a detailed log that records every change between the synced databases.”

Unlike Zapier, which only supports simple if/then automations, Whalesync allowed Braveen to create a deep integration between two core tools in his process with a 2-way sync. The tighter connection between tools meant Braveen could eliminate 80% of the steps involved in getting from opportunity to live landing page.

What’s more, by combining Whalesync’s 1-way sync feature with Zapier, Braveen was able to set up a universal content database in Notion that more or less maintains itself as it automatically pulls in all content from the blog, website, and other channels—past, present, and future.

“The old process was painful with way too many sources of truth and moving parts. With Whalesync, I can manage everything from one place. It’s so much easier.”

Impact

By rebuilding the process with Whalesync, Braveen was able to save a week of time and thousands of dollars per month. And because the cost of page creation is now close to zero, Descript is able to take more bets and be more creative with the pages they publish. Braveen says he can easily create 15-20 pages per month on his own, and scale up as needed by adding freelancers or repurposing copy from other pages.

Why Braveen Loves Whalesync

When we chatted with Braveen, he shared a couple of his favorite things about Whalesync:

  • Two-way sync AND one-way sync
  • Deep integration with Webflow (that Zapier doesn’t provide)
  • All the features that give peace of mind
  • Highly responsive customer support

Summary

In summary, Braveen’s switch from Zapier to Whalesync helped him to streamline his team’s process and ultimately save thousands each month. The success here underscores the importance of choosing the right automation tools to streamline workflows and improve productivity.
